All lasting joy is on the Calvary road

Saturday, September 27th, 2008
What a tragic waste when people turn away from the Calvary road of love and suffering. All the riches of the glory of God in Christ are on that road. All the sweetest fellowship with Jesus is there. All the treasures of assurance. All the ecstasies of joy. All the clearest sightings of eternity. All the noblest camaraderie. All the humblest affections. All the most tender acts of forgiving kindness. All the deepest discoveries of God’s Word. All the most earnest prayers. They are all on the Calvary road where Jesus walks with his people. Take up your cross and follow Jesus. On this road, and this road alone, life is Christ and death is gain. Life on every other road is wasted.

Ever think you can’t make a difference in this life? Check out this inspiring story we just saw on Current TV:

Our weaknesses, God’s glory

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008
Undoubtedly, I’m not the first person to see Christian themes in the film The Wizard of Oz. Everyone else has found something profound in this classic, so why not a Christian worldview, too?

Perhaps most vividly for Christian worldview purposes, the main characters lack a virtue that, once grasped, will make them whole. The Lion needs courage, and the Tin Man and Scarecrow need a heart and a mind, respectively, both of which will complete them, make them whole—even human. Meanwhile, Dorothy just wants to find her home again.

This theme of completedness is found throughout the Scriptures, in both the Old and New Testaments. God has a way of not resting until we are “shored up” in a category that we would most likely prefer to just ignore. Moses is told to speak, despite his stutter. Peter has to confront his self-interested betrayal of his Lord. God wants us to be whole.

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

We just received a press release on this upcoming tour:

Art, Music, Justice Tour

ART*MUSIC*JUSTICE on tour this fall, benefiting both the International Justice Mission and Food For the Hungry.

The International Justice Mission (www.IJM.org) is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. Food for the Hungry (www.FH.org) works in more than 26 developing countries providing disaster and emergency relief, and implementing sustainable development programs to transform communities physically and spiritually.

Derek is pleased to be joining Sara Groves, Brandon Heath, Sandra McCracken, and Charlie Peacock on this tour, running from September 19th-October 26th (Click here for dates), bringing not only the music of these tremendous artists but also telling stories of the great work of these organizations as they work for justice, advocate for the oppressed, and point towards the day coming when all things will be made right. More than just music, these unique evenings will bring with them opportunities to involve yourself in the stories of our poorest neighbors.

- we could change the world!!!

INHABITED - The Revolution

INHABITED - ‘If We Could Love’ (mp3 clip)

You hold up a sign
You shout out some lines
As she hangs her head down
You talk about love
You sing about grace
But would you take her in
If she chose not to stay
Yeah we’ve got to save ourselves
Before we can save somebody else

If we could love
We could change the world
Yeah we’d show them what we’re talkin’ about
If we could love we could change the world
Yeah we’d show them, show them
What we’re all about

You cover your guilt
Religion suits you well
But you’ve got secrets you’ll never tell
Where’s the forgiveness
That we’ve all known
You point your finger
And throw your stones
Have you forgotten where
We’ve come from
No man is better than the next one

If we could love
We could change the world
Yeah we’d show them what we’re talkin’ about
If we could love we could change the world
Yeah we’d show them, show them
What we’re all about

Oh God, would You move us now
Take away our foolish pride
Would You heal our land
Give us Your heart
Oh please don’t pass us by
