Being close to Jesus

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

We often look for Jesus in religious places, among religious people; or perhaps we look for Him in places of power and relevance. That’s where the world often “sticks” Jesus and where even His followers (although we should know better) go looking for Him.

It reminded me of what Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 25 about the final judgment. Those headed for heaven are those who came to see Jesus when He was sick, gave Him food and water when He was hungry and thirsty, gave Him clothes when He was naked, and visited Him in prison. The people were shocked! “When did we do any of these things for you?” they asked. Jesus responded, “I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me - you did it to me.”

If we want to be close to Jesus, we need to be serving those in need. Mother Teresa knew this truth. She used to say that when she looked into the eyes of the dying people in Calcutta for whom she was caring, she would see the face of Jesus.
