The only sure thing

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Let’s face it. We control nothing. Not the weather, not wars, not the stock market - not even whether or not our loved ones will keep loving us. The pain of a broken marriage, a church split, the loss of a loved one - there are infinite levels of “sure things” from which we can fall.

That’s why it’s such a relief when we surrender to the fact that God is the only one who is able to keep us from falling. Not our money, not our best intentions - nothing except our Heavenly Father will keep us safe.

Glory revealed through the Cross

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

We all love it when nice things are said about us. I’m no exception. That’s why I’ve got to admit that of all of the Scriptures in the Bible, Isaiah 53:5 is one of my favorites:

“But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds.”

There are so many reasons I love this passage. Obviously it’s a powerful, dramatic, and reflective verse dealing with the crucifixion of Christ. But what I love most is that it involves me.

When I study stories in the Bible - say, David and Goliath - sure, it relates to my life, but it doesn’t address me directly. That’s the beauty of this passage - it’s so blatantly about me. It’s about my sins. I deserve the wounds, the whip, the wrath. But somehow, by his wounds, I get my healing.

I love that. It brings the entirety of Christ’s sacrifice into clear focus for me. It makes my salvation real. I deserve death, but somehow God saw fit to substitute his Son, living as real flesh and blood, to pay the price for me.

The reality of Jesus’s crucifixion isn’t something we should pull out of the closet once a year, dusting off for Easter ceremonies. It’s much more personal than that. It’s a truth we should live with daily - remembering Christ’s sacrifice so that we take full advantage of our status as the redeemed.

Jesus only saves sinners

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

“Do you say you are sinners? It is just to such as you that God’s grace is given.” - D.L. Moody

Isn’t that amazing! The only people who will not receive God’s grace are the ones who do not believe they need it. Have you sinned? Do you need God’s grace today? Hey, let’s face it. We need God’s grace DAILY. Let us come boldly to the throne of grace and pour our hearts out before our good and loving Heavenly Father who has given us so much!

From God's Word...
1 John 4:9-10

God showed his love for us when he sent his only Son into the world to give us life. Real love isn’t our love for God, but his love for us. God sent his Son to be the sacrifice by which our sins are forgiven.

One of the greatest threats to families today

Monday, June 16th, 2008

One of the greatest threats to families today is the issue of pornography. It’s a rampant problem that is running its course through the minds and lives of men and women. There are many lies that pornography tries to feed its victims, but one of the greatest lies is the issue of fulfillment.

When a person begins to look at soft pornography they will become desensitized to it over time. This leads to a deeper dive into the dark world of pornography. Before you know it, you could find yourself looking at hard core pornography, which can eventually lead to porn that you never thought you would expose yourself to - all because you allowed yourself to become desensitized to these images. The dark end of that process is when you begin to act out what you have seen because looking no longer satisfies your urge or desire.

Keep your eyes on the ways of the Lord, and you will enjoy the satisfaction of what it means to know God and be known by God.

From God's Word...
Proverbs 23:26-28

My son, give me your heart,
And let your eyes observe my ways.
For a harlot is a deep pit,
And a seductress is a narrow well.
She also lies in wait as for a victim,
And increases the unfaithful among men.
