A Sure Guide

From God's Word...
Isaiah 42:16

And I will lead the blind
in a way that they do not know,
in paths that they have not known
I will guide them.
I will turn the darkness before them into light,
the rough places into level ground.
These are the things I do,
and I do not forsake them.

Charles Spurgeon comments on this passage of scripture…

Think of the infinitely glorious Jehovah acting as a Guide to the blind! What boundless condescension does this imply! A blind man cannot find a way which he does not know. Even when he knows the road, it is hard for him to traverse it; but a road which he has not known is quite out of the question for his unguided feet. Now, we are by nature blind as to the way of salvation, and yet the Lord leads us into it and brings us to Himself, and then opens our eyes. As to the future, we are all of us blind and cannot see an hour before us; but the Lord Jesus will lead us even to our journey’s end. Blessed be His name!

We cannot guess in which way deliverance can possibly come to us, but the Lord knows, and He will lead us till we shall have escaped every danger. Happy are those who place their hand in that of the great Guide and leave their way and themselves entirely with Him. He will bring them all the way; and when He has brought them home to glory and has opened their eyes to see the way by which He has led them, what a song of gratitude will they sing unto their great Benefactor! Lord, lead Thy poor blind child this day, for I know not my way!

The truth about everything

“If what Christians say about Good Friday is true, then it is, quite simply, the truth about everything.” - Richard John Neuhaus

Check out today’s Breakpoint Commentary:

Easter for many of us is a day of family gatherings and a celebration, not only of Christ’s resurrection, but also the coming of spring. Today, on Good Friday, let’s not rush the celebration before coming face-to-face with the paradoxes that are at the heart of the Christian faith.

Those paradoxes are the subject of a wonderful book Death on a Friday Afternoon: Meditations on the Last Words of Jesus written by my friend Father Richard John Neuhaus.

A paradox, as G. K. Chesterton famously put it, is “Truth standing on her head to get attention.”

Good Friday - how can it be?

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Life in the kingdom of God is full of paradoxes. You get a return by giving, you truly live by dying to self, and you run the race of this earthly life with patience. How can I give away and yet still receive? How can I die and yet live? How can I run and not be hurried, anxious, or tired?

And the most mind-boggling of all:

on this day, called ‘Good Friday’, we remember the Friday that Jesus Christ was crucified on a cross. How can anything associated with a crucifixion be called ‘good‘?

Where is the hope? Where is the good news?

There is absolutely no way we can earn salvation.
We are all dead in our sin.
Jesus died on that cross.

But wait, God in His word says we don’t have to earn salvation. It’s a gift from Him to us. When we accept the gift from Him, we have abundant, eternal life.

Jesus rose the third day - alive, and appeared to hundreds - forever testifying that He is God - having the power of life over death, offering the gift salvation to any and all that believe in Him.

We learn in the Bible about our sin problem. Me, you, and everyone has this problem. As we read further, we see that it’s not just a problem, it’s death. We’ve got to fix this problem, or we will never truly live. How? God tells us in His word that there is absolutely no way we can earn salvation or eternal life.

Then we read in the Bible what Jesus claimed: that He was the Son of God, the Way, the Truth, and the Life - the only way to an eternal, abundant life that only comes from a right relationship with God through Him. Salvation is available for all and we don’t have to work for it? Yes! Salvation comes by only believing in Him - that what He says is true and that He is who He says He is.

How rich are you?

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

“Do you want to know how rich you are? Add up everything you own that money cannot buy, that death nor disaster cannot take away, and then you’ll know just how rich you are. What did you discover? Hopefully, you discovered that it’s time you started laying up true riches. Because all the rest will burn away. If you are putting all of your labor in this world, it’s like rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship.” - Love Worth Finding ministries

From God's Word...
Matthew 6:19-21

Don’t store up treasures on earth! Moths and rust can destroy them, and thieves can break in and steal them. Instead, store up your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy them, and thieves cannot break in and steal them. Your heart will always be where your treasure is.
