Our heart’s desires

Ever wonder why so many people are not satisfied with where they are in life?

Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Maybe this verse from God’s word holds a clue. Not only do we learn that God will give us the desires of our heart if we’ll just delight ourselves in Him - but we can deduce that our true heart’s desires are in Him. He won’t give us what we may think is best at the cost of not giving us what He knows is the best - which is His will. God will not act contrary to His nature and who He is. God has created us with a longing for fellowship with Him and the good things that result from that. Getting in line with His will unlocks the blessings that satisfy the deep longings of our hearts. So many people are looking for ‘those things’ or some person to satisfy - but in reality, everyone’s heart is longing for what only God can give. There’s a good reason why the things of the world don’t satisfy us - we were not created to be satisfied by them.

In this verse, we learn about the nature of God and how He loves to give, but we also learn something about ourselves that we may not have realized before.

How do you do this? Delight yourself in the Lord? How do you do this? Get “in line with his will?” I ask in all seriousness. I need to know.

  2. Roger Says:

Read his word and pray. Honestly ask Him about your desires and your desire to know Him and His will for your life. Look through the concordance for those parts of the Bible that address your questions, then study them and pray over them. A prayer in God’s will is a prayer that He will always answer. I believe that God desires for us to know Him and His will. So, if you honestly go to Him seeking these things (with what He’s graciously given us: prayer, His word), you will get answers. As we draw close to Him, He’ll draw close to us. James 4:8

What’s cool is that God knows what makes us happy even if we don’t. So, as we draw closer to him we’ll learn more about ourselves as we let Him take away those things that we were hanging on to. He created us and placed the desires in our heart according to His good plan. Jer 29:11
