Created for more than personal autonomy

Today’s BreakPoint commentary hits the cultural nail on the head…

Children, Not Choices

Personal autonomy and the right to “choose” are the highest values in Western culture — codified in the law after Roe v. Wade and central to the Alito hearings. Being able to “choose” is so important that questioning whatever is being chosen is regarded as a kind of “intolerance.”

Os Guinness once said, “Choice for modern people is a right that overwhelms both responsibility and rationality.”

Let’s choose to not be irresponsible and irrational.

We are certainly free to choose, but we’re not free to choose the consequences of our choices. When a conversation is initiated to discuss the harm or good (whatever the case may be) of those choices, that is a worthwhile thing. It should be welcomed instead of fought against - and unfairly labeled as intolerant. Let’s not just scratch the surface of life - let’s dig deep! Let’s think deeply. Let’s not be content with just getting by. Let’s want to be better tomorrow than we are today. Life is bigger than us. We were created for more than personal autonomy.

...watching the Jesus film

We read this account in a recent Jesus Film Project newsletter:

A film team was traveling from village to village in a solidly Hindu area in Asia. While carrying
their equipment by foot to a village, they were confronted by five angry people. The five began shouting, using abusive language, swearing… accusing the film team of spreading Christianity. It was a tense and potentially dangerous situation.
Rather than shouting back, the team told their accusers the story of the gospel. They explained how Jesus was God’s ultimate sacrifice, that there was no need for them to sacrifice to idols, since the Son of God had shed His own blood for them and now offered forgiveness to all who believe.
The accusers were amazed and stopped their shouting. They even said they had never heard such good news before and agreed to attend the showing that night. When “JESUS” concluded, all indicated decisions to receive Christ. The five now regularly attend a New Life Study Group… and are growing in their faith!

More proof that the proper way to evangelize is to communicate truth instead of debating error. (Titus 3:3-9)
