Canadian on a Bible retreat uses Brazilian martial arts to fight off a grizzly bear

The Fort Frances Times is reporting that an Alberta man on a Bible retreat “successfully used his Brazilian martial arts training on the weekend to fend off a charging grizzly.”

According to the article, the martial arts training kicked for Lyle Simpson after being ambushed by the bear. He kicked the bear in the face. The bear was stunned. The group of friends regrouped and made the fifteen minute trek back to Whispering Pines Bible camp.

The Power in Prayer

In Matthew 6:8, the Lord said, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” So why would God want you to talk to Him about all your needs when He already knows what they are? The fact is that praying is not informing God; it’s honoring Him as the source of your life. He wants you to understand who He is - an all-powerful Father who loves to involve His children in what He’s doing.

Pensees (Penguin Classics)

Many people are familiar with “Pascal’s wager” but Blaise Pascal worked on a Christian apologetics project (that unfortunately was not finished at the time of his death) that has since been compiled into a collection known as Pensees (thoughts).

In it he analyzes the paradox of the human condition - where man is capable of both greatness and wretchedness.

“The more enlightened we are the more greatness and vileness we discover in man. … Man’s greatness and wretchedness are so evident that the true religion must necessarily teach us that there is in man some great principle of greatness and some great principle of wretchedness.”

Pascal continues…

“What sort of freak then is man! How novel, how monstrous, how chaotic, how paradoxical, how prodigious! Judge of all things, feeble earthworm, repository of truth, sink of doubt and error, the glory and refuse of the universe!”
