Kudzu Curbs Binge Drinking - Less Alcohol, More Effective…
Study: Kudzu helps curb binge drinking
The miracles of modern science…
Lukas was not certain why but speculated that kudzu increases blood alcohol levels and speeds up its effects. More simply put, the subjects needed fewer beers to feel drunk.
Obviously we have differing opinions about the purpose behind curbing binge drinking. Less actual alcohol consumption only lessens the likelihood of alcohol poisoning, it does nothing to combat alcoholism or the negative effects of a lifestyle of habitual drinking (specifically for the purpose of intoxication).
Researcher Scott Lukas did not have any trouble rounding up volunteers for his study, published in this month’s issue of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
…
Lukas recruited 14 men and women in their 20s to spend four 90-minute sessions consuming beer and watching TV. Researchers selected people who said they regularly consumed three to four drinks per day.
I’m shocked… really. Hmmm… free beer and TV… just post a sign on any state college campus and you should have plenty of volunteers.
Though kudzu won’t turn drinkers into teetotalers, Lukas said, he hopes it can help heavy drinkers to cut back.
“That way, they’re a lot closer to being able to cut down completely,” he said. (emphasis added)
…
“The most urgent need is helping people who cannot help themselves, who need a drug to help them stop drinking,” Keung said.
One more time, someone explain to me how a drug that simply reduces the amount of alcohol required for intoxication is going to help a person who needs to stop drinking? Any psychologist or counselor will tell you that physical addiction is the smallest part of the problem, it’s the mental addiction that is the most difficult to overcome. However, this discovery might thin out the Kudzu infestation a bit in the south as Kudzu hors d’oeuvres become a regular addition to High School and College Parties.
