Reality: MTV offers ‘incessant sleaze’

Study: MTV offers ‘incessant sleaze’ - MTV says Parents Television Council report unfair

>During one week last March, the watchdog Parents Television Council said it counted 3,056 flashes of nudity or sexual situations and 2,881 verbal references to sex.

That’s an average of 18 flashes of nudity or sexual situations and 17 verbal references to sex per hour.

How does MTV respond?

>MTV spokeswoman Jeannie Kedas said the network follows the same standards as broadcasters. MTV reflects the culture and what its viewers are interested in, she said. “It’s unfair and inaccurate to paint MTV with that brush of irresponsibility,” she said. “We think it’s underestimating young people’s intellect and level of sophistication.”

First tactic - the ‘everybody’s doing it’ excuse.

If that doesn’t work, try plan b….

>MTV labeled the report unfair and said the group ignores the network’s public service efforts, like its Emmy-winning “Choose or Lose” campaign on the presidential election.

Why are they trying to get us to look away from the majority of their programming (which they just said appeals to young people’s intellect and level of sophistication) to focus on something that is not part of their normal programming?

Meanwhile, some still heap praise on the folks at MTV for what they do.

McGrath transforms television

The positive result is that with studies like this, more and more people will begin to understand exactly what it is that they do.
