Captain Obvious Strikes Back!

Half of kids suffer war, poverty, AIDS

In his foreword to the report, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said poverty denied children dignity and endangered their lives, conflict robbed them of a secure family life and HIV/AIDS killed parents, teachers, doctors and children themselves.

Whew. I’m sure glad I had Kofi Annan’s expert opinion on that one!

Freighter fuel spill threatens island habitat

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A major spill of dense, viscous fuel from a freighter that ran aground was menacing sensitive wildlife habitat in the Aleutian Islands, but finding the six crew members lost at sea remained a priority — despite their diminishing odds for survival. (emphasis mine).

As if this were a bad thing…

Thousands of gallons of heavy bunker fuel and diesel spilled from a soybean freighter that was ripped clean in half off the shore of Unalaska Island. Near a wildlife refuge, the area is home to sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, tanner crabs, halibut and kelp beds.

Let me tell you right now, if it’s between human life and some crabs, otters and seals… I don’t care how cute they may be, we’re more important than they are!

And by the way, why are we worrying about this… why can’t we just let evolution take it’s course. I mean, after all, if evolution is a scientific fact… can’t we just assume that they will evolve some special mechanism to deal with it? Problem solved.

Peterson’s lack of emotion

On November 12, the same six-man, six-woman jury convicted Peterson of first-degree murder with special circumstances in the death of Laci and of second-degree murder in the death of the fetus.

Scott Peterson kills a baby by killing the mother… second degree murder. Mother kills baby by abortion… freedom of choice. Shouldn’t this case set a precedence?

One thing that really disturbed me was the smiling face of Ron Grantski (Laci’s stepfather) holding the newspaper announcing the death penalty for Scott Peterson. I didn’t follow the case like a lot of people… if he was truly guilty, the death penalty seems fair. However, I wonder if it shouldn’t be a somewhat more somber occasion.

Man bites dog, police say

GAINESVILLE, Florida (AP) — A man has been charged with animal cruelty for allegedly biting his Jack Russell terrier as punishment…

…Officers kicked down the apartment door when they heard an argument and a barking dog.

PETA members unite!!! Does anyone else think this is a bit extreme? It must have been a really slow day at the department…

‘Intelligent design’ mandate spurs lawsuit

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (AP) — The state American Civil Liberties Union plans to file a federal lawsuit Tuesday against a Pennsylvania school district that is requiring students to learn about alternatives to the theory of evolution.

I’m shocked. Really. What exactly is it that they’re afraid of? What other subject in science are we forbidden to learn alternatives to? Particularly if that subject is a theory that has serious question to its validity…

The ACLU has said intelligent design is a more secular form of creationism, a Biblical-based view that credits the origin of species to God, and may violate the constitutional separation of church and state.

If it’s secular, how can it violate the (non-constitutional) separation of church and state. Most religions ascribe to some form of creation account, as does a significantly large portion of the American public. Why should the theory of intelligent design be ruled out if it is not tied to a particular religion?

And why is it that racial minorities, national minorities and sexual minorities are all entitled to special rights and priveleges… but religious minorities are expected to surrender theirs simply because they are religious?

Heart Surgeon Doesn’t Think McDonald’s Should Be In Hospital

The Cleveland Clinic is the superstar of heart health. Year after year, the hospital is rated No. 1.

But there’s a McDonald’s in the middle of the heart center and the new chief executive officer and world-renowned heart surgeon is wondering why, NewsChannel5’s Alicia Booth reported.

Sounds like a great way to guarantee repeat business…

He has already closed a Pizza Hut that was located in the hospital. WEWS reported he also knows what too many Big Macs can do to a person.

The fast food nazi… No fries for you!

Not all the clinic’s patients and visitors agree with the move.

“You know, I really don’t think that matters, I think it’s a person’s own decision what they want to do,” one patient said.

And again it comes down to that inevitable question… are you pro-life or pro-choice?

We may not disagree with ‘big oil’ but why joke around about 6 people - who probably had families, loved ones, wives, and kids - who may be dead - and casually comment this may not be ‘a bad thing’?

Until we seriously look at alternatives to an oil based economy, we shouldn’t gripe about its existence. Our choices, consumption, and economics fuel this beast. Instead of keeping it on a chain, we should get rid of it.

You have seriously misunderstood me. My point was that those who wrote the article pointed out that “finding the six crew members lost at sea remained a priority ? despite their diminishing odds for survival.”

This statement made it sound like it was a bad thing that finding the crew members remained a priority… instead of cleaning up the oil spill.

Rest assured, I think it’s a terrible thing that those people lost their lives. I believe the search should be (have been) continued until the survivors were found or beyond all hope of recovery. My prayers go out to the families of those who were lost.

I really thought the statement in the next paragraph would have made my position clear. I will try harder to avoid confusion in the future. In light of this confusion, I have underlined and italicized the portion of the text to which I was referring. God bless.
