Friday Freebie…

Ogg Vorbis Encoding

Absolutely free and open sound compression. Better sound quality than mp3 - take the test. Smaller size than mp3 for equivalent compression quality. Royalty-free encoding algorithm. Alien-esque cool name. You just can’t beat it. For those who have stayed on top of audio and compression, ogg is no secret. Still, many people haven’t heard of it - or aren’t using it. You should be! I highly recommend it… even if you want to replace all your mp3s! Download the tools, you’ll need to get started. Or you can download CDex - a free audio ripper tool that rips/compresses straight to ogg (as well as many other formats including mp3, wav, etc…).

The down side… there aren’t currently any hardware ogg players that I’m aware of. But I understand that they are in development.

And as a bonus: if you like recording music/sound… check out Audacity - a free, multitrack audio recording program that supports ogg directly. Who says you can’t get anything good for free these days!?!
