From the NY Times…

Two Nations Under God

Some quick thoughts on his comments…

Is it a country that does not intrude into people’s sexual preferences and the marriage unions they want to make?

Where in human history has same-sex marriage been condoned? The tone of this question implies that we are denying something that everybody else allows.

Is it a country that allows a woman to have control over her body?

Do women have 2 hearts…2 minds? That child in the womb is in her body, but not part of her body. That logic is silly.

Is it a country where the line between church and state bequeathed to us by our Founding Fathers should be inviolate?

Nobody is saying that we need an official religion or church. We just want freedom OF religion. Others want freedom FROM religion.

Is it a country where religion doesn’t trump science?

God created the world, therefore the study of science is part of discovering His creation. Faith and science don’t conflict.

My problem with the Christian fundamentalists supporting Mr. Bush is not their spiritual energy or the fact that I am of a different faith. It is the way in which he and they have used that religious energy to promote divisions and intolerance at home and abroad.

What he calls intolerance…is not intolerance at all, but Christians simply trying to be salt and light in the culture.
Matthew 5:13-16

We can’t help it if the culture is so far from the truth of God’s word that when they hear it, they harden their hearts even more. Our job is to put God’s word out there so the Spirit can work in peoples lives.
Heb 4:12

He wants us to be people of faith and have spiritual energy, but we just can’t apply it anywhere - in result, neutralizing our faith (ahh, how subtle is his argument, yet the end result is spiritually deadly).

How can we follow the instructions of someone who is not a believer in Christianity or the Bible (as he has stated above) and be obedient to the Lord when we are told in the Bible to be an example to the lost world around us? Will the lost come to see a change in us when we fit in with everybody else? If we end up siding with the culture on many issues, are we hurting people or helping them?

Hmmmmm… ancient Greece and Rome. Both of which were mighty nations and fell miserably, likely due to their decadence. Western culture bases much of its thought on these two cultures. I suggest we learn from their mistakes instead of repeating them.

Good point. Only two countries in modern times (the Netherlands and Belgium) have legalized same-sex marriage. If we want to see what the effects are on society, we can look to them. So far, it is not good. The institution of marriage in those countries is rapidly dying, with most young couples cohabiting or choosing to remain single. In some areas of Norway, 80 percent of firstborn children are conceived out of wedlock, as are 60 percent of subsequent births.
