Style over substance…
Barack Obama is running for a Senate seat from Illinois, and so far, the media has yet to scratch the surface on what he believes in and stands for. They are so enamored by his charisma, that they seem to want to declare him worthy of office on that alone.
To clarify that, here’s a little snippet from Time magazine online…
If other Democrats shared more of Barack Obama’s good fortune, they would have a better chance of recapturing the Senate. First, his G.O.P. opponent, Jack Ryan, dropped out after revelations of his alleged visits to sex clubs. Then Ryan’s replacement, conservative agitator Alan Keyes, alienated his party with extremist rhetoric on abortion and homosexuality. Obama, a charismatic state senator, wowed the Democratic Convention, presenting himself as an optimistic coalition builder. The Senate shoo-in isn’t just lucky, he’s self-effacing about his success as well.
Reality check:
>extremist rhetoric on abortion and homosexuality
Note that they don’t tell us what the ‘extremist rhetoric’ consisted of, they just state that he is guilty of it and we are supposed to make a judgement on it based on their opinion.
>presenting himself as an optimistic coalition builder
How you present yourself isn’t always who you are. For an example of that, compare the presentation of himself as ‘an optimistic coalition builder’ with the online document here.
>he’s self-effacing about his success as well.
Well, I would argue that that is part of the presentation as well. Compare that to a quote Obama made recently about his opponent…
Keyes responds to Obama’s wish to spank him
According to the September 4 Southern Illinoisan, Obama was quoted as saying to a group of Democrats in Carbondale last week:
I’m not going to lie to you. I’m going to win this election. I don’t want to just win. I want to give this guy who is running against me a spanking. The reason I do is because he exemplifies the kind of scorched earth, slash and burn negative campaign that has become the custom in Washington and it is the reason why we can’t get anything done.
