Word Games…
Unfortunately, we’re not talking about scrabble here.
Ad challenges GOP’s stand on gay rights
> Calling language in the Republican Party’s platform “vicious and mean-spirited,”
They preface the message by using provocative words to get our attention and make us read or listen further.
>”The radical right has hijacked the party, and we’re fighting back,”
Create the impression that something has terribly gone wrong with the political party. Everything was just fine, we had control, and then this group (insert derogatory label such as ‘radical right’ here) has hijacked (I believe that’s a triple word score!) the party.
When in reality, the party has never embraced their views, so this is no change or ‘hijacking’ as they call it. They are trying to rally public opinion by using terms like ‘fighting back’ for things (presumably ‘rights’) that they feel have been ‘taken’ from them.
>Or will we divide the American family with the politics of intolerance and fear that only lead to hate? Our choice is clear.”
‘Intolerance‘ and ‘fear‘ are buzzwords that are used to paint those that disagree with them, and most likely will be Christians that stand on Biblical principle…as the root of their anger and frustration is with God and his word. This is not a political issue but a spiritual one.
>In the latter part of the ad, around the reference to “intolerance and fear,” images of conservative commentator Pat Buchanan, the Rev. Jerry Falwell, and Sen. Rick Santorum are shown. All three are social conservatives who oppose recognizing same-sex marriage and benefits for same-sex couples.
Are these three people above intolerant or fearful of gays? Or do they just not condone their behavior? Why don’t the ones who feel this way approach these folks and try to find out where they are coming from? Or is it easier to label them and write them off as agents of political hate? Which goes back to the spiritual nature of this issue. Is it easier to go with the flow and act like we’re alright, or to recognize and deal with our own sinful nature?
As pastor/author Erwin Lutzer has recently stated in regards to the same-sex marriage issue:
Just suppose for a moment that the Bible is the Word of God, and this same Word condemns homosexuality. Suppose, furthermore, that God created children to need both a father and a mother to model gender diversity. Suppose that homosexuality in the end is destructive not just to society but to the individual homosexuals themselves. Supposing all the above are true, would it be “hateful” to oppose same-sex marriages?
The same can be said for all sins, not to single out homosexuality. Sin is destructive and always leads to consequences and will either keep us from or hinder our relationship with our Creator who wants us to find life in Him instead of those things that don’t satisfy and won’t last. Is that a message of intolerance or fear? No - to tell someone otherwise is to do them greater harm than to be truthful, no matter how unpleasant it may ‘feel’ to them at the time.
