The press gets the headline they’ve been waiting for…

GOP lawmaker: Iraq war a ‘mistake’

Too bad for liberals that it was spoken by a Republican Congressman that nobody has ever heard of.

This is a follow up to an earlier post pointing out how the Press has been trying to get President Bush or high-ranking Republicans to say that the Iraq war is a mistake. That kind of Kerry campaign ad would be a dream come true and might actually give him a bounce in his poll numbers…so I guess you can’t blame them for trying.

Congressional Republicans were surprised and angry at Bereuter’s comments.

Rep. Ray LaHood, R-Illinois, a member of the intelligence committee, described Bereuter as “very bitter” for having been passed over in recent years to head both the intelligence and international relations committees. He suggested Bereuter’s comments were a parting shot to House GOP leaders and President Bush.

There’s nothing like going out with class. Retiring Congressman Bereuter says something that doesn’t satisfy the liberals, only makes his colleagues mad or disappointed with him, and destroys any goodwill that he may have built up in Washington over his career.

“The cost in casualties is already large and growing, and the immediate and long-term financial costs are incredible.”

Who’s keeping the financial tab on war? Do we have an understood plan where once we spend a certain amount of money, we declare that we are quitting, no matter what stage the war is in? If we are justified in our decision to fight, do we stop because of the monetary costs? Does a moral right become a wrong if it is suddenly seen as ‘too expensive?’ Of course not. This kind of logic is silly, and is even more frustrating when it comes from members of Congress - who never cut government programs because of cost, they just raise taxes to pay for their excess.
