The new Something Like Silas album ‘Divine Invitation‘ was released today!

Something Like Silas

Here’s what the critics are saying…

Divine Invitation is a breath of fresh air among an avalanche of stale worship acts. The five-piece band cut its teeth in front of a live audience, as it serves as the worship band at its local church. Straight out of San Diego, Something Like Silas crafts alterna-worship along the lines of Delirious and The Benjamin Gate, while frontman Eric M. Owyoungs earnest voice carries the same intensity as San Diego neighbor and Switchfoot frontman Jon Foremans. Seven Ball

Its good to hear rock and roll again. In a time where modern worship has a decidedly pop leaning, West Coast band Something Like Silas brings us straight up rock and roll in all of the varied forms that the art form has integrated into itself in the last decadeSomething Like Silas brings something unique to the ministry of worship a worship that is, in a sense, naked, fully unafraid of lyrics that haunt and inspire, often at the same time…Ive never heard a worship record that so wisely and powerfully incorporates the dark somber times of faith into life-altering praise. Its obvious that the band has the technical skills, but also an anointing to bring healing to souls longing for God. worshipnotes.org

Shouldn’t we all just get along?

Southern Baptists Quit World Alliance

“Our concern is not financial,” said the Rev. Denton Lotz, general secretary of the world alliance. “Our concern is schism and division. Christians need to be a united voice.”

Contrary to the trend in the church these days, when given the opportunity between heresy and schism, always choose schism. We don’t have to ‘all get along‘ if that means we sacrifice the truth in the process. Without truth, where are we? We are no longer the church, but a man-made social club.

This is a time in history where the church needs to lead with the boldness of knowing that God’s Word is true and necessary to address the needs of the individual human soul and the culture as a whole.

RED PILL: BLUE PILL

Friday, June 11th, 2004

We are a drug nation.

When Chad Taylor noticed his son was apparently experiencing serious side effects from Ritalin prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, he decided to take the boy off the medication. Now, he says he may be accused of child abuse.

If you don’t give your kids drugs, you may go to jail

A concerned father notices multiple side effects on his son that he suspects are due to Ritalin. He takes his son off Ritalin.
The son gets better, but is now disruptive in class.

The result:
The teachers call the New Mexico Department of Youth, Child, Family Services.

Drugs are becoming the easy out for our societies ills. Is there anything we can’t make a pill for now? Are you nervous is a crowd? Take the yellow pill. Are you constipated? Take the red pill. Are you having ‘intimacy’ problems? Take the blue pill. Is your kid ‘driving you nuts’? Give him an amphetamine.

Here’s the big question:
Why are we all so unhappy?
Why can we not cope with reality?

I thought the ’sexual revolution’ was supposed to free us from all guilt and concern. I thought the self help pundits were supposed to make us feel better about ourselves. We have more time saving devices than any other society in the world, yet we seem to have less time for our fellow man than ever.

Young people turn again their parents’ ‘church lite’

Sunday, June 6th, 2004

Two decades after baby boomers invented the suburban megachurch, which removed crosses or stained-glass images of Jesus in favor of neutral environments, their children are now wearing “Jesus Is My Homeboy” T-shirts. — John Leland - New York Times News Service

I just got through reading this article about the ‘generational shift’ from megachurches to alternative churches. Here’s a link to the original story — Young people turn against their parents’ ‘church lite’ — view megachurches as slick and impersonal.

Here are my highlights from the article:

“The deity-free ‘church lite’ of the megachurches, that’s the last thing these people want,” he said. “They want to talk about God. It’s hard-core, not in a fire and brimstone way, but it has to be raw, real.”

The article also brings up the question ‘Are these ‘world like ways’ in themselves sinful?’

Stephen Prothero, chairman of the religion department at Boston University, reminds us that :

  • Christian tracts handed out in the 19th century were one of the first mass media.
  • In the 1930s, the evangelist Charles Fuller used the new medium of radio to broadcast his sermons.
  • Four decades later, the Jesus movement of the 1970s adopted the vibe of the 1960s counterculture.
  • “They identify with being an underground movement, which is what Christianity was in the beginning,” Lucas said of his congregation. “Living out a life with Christ at the center draws a lot of flak. Not a lot of people will celebrate that.”
