TV: Turn it off. It doesn’t even know your name

Thursday, June 3rd, 2004

From the ‘NOT SO’ REALITY TV department:

The New York Post is reporting that ‘at a taping for the upcoming “bad talent” series, “Superstar USA” producers lied and told audience members that the talentless contestants were actually terminally ill patients from the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Are you a TV junkie? Why? I finally started breaking this habit when a friend exhibited some tough love.
He said ‘Why are you spending time with them? They don’t even know your name.’

We schedule our time to spend time with faceless friends who wouldn’t recognize and or help us in times of trouble. We skip church to see the Sunday night movie of the week or ‘the big game’. We talk more about ’season finales’ than we do our hopes or dreams.

In the book Silicon Snake Oil, the author reminds us that every minute we spend in electronic entertainment, is one less minute spent outside volunteering in your community, talking with your family, and chasing your dreams.

Turn off the One Eyed Monster.
You’ll be glad you did.

Finally, my friends, keep your minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don’t ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worthy of praise.
