The Definition of the Word ‘Evil’

Tuesday, April 13th, 2004

It depends on what the definition of the word ‘evil’ is…

I found this webpage on the ‘Global Perspectives on U.S. Policy’ while I was doing a Google search on ‘arrogant foreign policy‘ as this seems to be a favorite liberal catch phrase these days…but that’s another story for another day.

Here was one of the topics discussed by the participants…

When leading a fight against genocide, terrorism, and gross violations of human rights, should the U.S. identify the adversary as evil?

Wow, it looks like that was a serious question that wasn’t rhetorical!

If we are afraid to say or can’t discern that ‘genocide, terrorism, and gross violations of human rights’ are evil, then we have truly lost our way.

Liberals always say we must be a tolerant society…but should we tolerate evil? Maybe the better question is, can we tolerate evil and survive?

Jesus and Paul - The Word and the Witness

The three hour primetime special hosted by Peter Jennings on abc-tv last night came and went…for some good commentary on this special, I recommend Answers in Action.

Their summary is very insightful…

Jennings assembled a large cast of experts to share their views with us. Jennings does not identify for us whether any of these experts have any particular faith or belief in Jesus or Christianity. He does not tell us which ones are considered conservative and which liberal. He does not tell us much about their credentials or what has caused him to consider them experts. And by judicious and close cropping of their interviews, he manages to weave their comments so that everyone sounds reasonable and amiable, even though among them they present widely divergent views of Jesus.

It’s important to remember how tv programming can cut/splice commentary in a rapid-fire method to paint almost any picture. I wish these specials would allow for more context so the guests could really explain their views. But that is not really a hindrance for us luckily because we have access to the same Bible that these scholars have access to so I think the most appropriate ending to the special should have been a call to the viewer to read the Bible and decide for himself.

Ozzy Osbourne puts his finger on sin…

Ozzy Osbourne puts his finger on sin…

But doesn’t realize it…

In dealing with this latest development and searching for answers…Ozzy had this to say in an interview with Larry King recently…

KING: You think somewhere you went wrong, Oz?

OZZY OSBOURNE: Well, you know, I believe it’s a family illness. Because I am a drug addict.

KING: You think it’s genetic?

OZZY OSBOURNE: I think it’s in the genes, you know.

We may be susceptible to certain sins depending on where our weaknesses lie, but this is something every human faces. Find me a person that is ‘genetically’ perfect to where they never stumble into addiction, never do selfish things, etc.

This is the sin problem that we all face, and Ozzy puts his finger on it, but what he fails to realize is that he and his family are not unique but just like everybody else. Thankfully God is no respecter of persons and through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, salvation is available for all. That includes Ozzy, Sharon, Jack, Kelly, you and me…

Bush: New Jobs Show ‘Policies Are Working’

Bush: New Jobs Show ‘Policies Are Working’

Alternate headline: The Truth Hurts.

Hammered by Democrats for months about a near-jobless economic recovery, President Bush on Friday basked in the news of a big jump in hiring last month, citing it as evidence that his “policies are working” as he heads into a tough re-election battle.

This is good economics news right? Well it depends on which side of the political fence you are on apparently. Here’s a quote from John Kerry…

“Obviously all of us are pleased with the job numbers this month, but there’s almost no way this administration will avoid having lost 2 million jobs.”

“all of us are pleased…but” Hmmm, that sounds a lot like the liberals position on abortion that was in the news yesterday.

Flashback…
“Everyone agrees on the need to protect pregnant women and the developing lives within them from harm – and with just a few phone calls, the President could have persuaded Congress to pass a consensus bill doing so without entangling it in the abortion rights issue.”

You can’t say you are for something and then attach a bunch of qualifiers to it. Then that means you aren’t really for it as it was stated.
